Back to Work

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/07/monday-sign-letter-of-offer.html I rejoined my ex-company this week, feel as if never left, it's as if I just came back from a long weekend, obvious difference is have to start all over again in terms of year(s) of service and bonus/leave pro-rated but that doesn't bother me at all. But I'm quite surprised that colleagues are all very nice and welcoming especially the bosses are super nice, I guess the good thing about this company is the people, which I think is very important, not much internal politics, mostly external politics. Now I'm under another supervisor but same big boss, cool, easy-going, doesn't put on airs or anything, previous one was equally good too, people are nice in this company, just the customers sometimes overbearing, and the projects too jia lat, but I heard my past projects are doing better now, maybe it's because I left lol. And now that Covid is kind of endemic in Singapore, a lot of

Sheng Siong have Very Impressive Employee Benefits

Image
Saw their recruitment poster last weekend and I was very impressed by their employee benefits, so much so I took a photo of it. Note that the salary is "Up To", not sure what's the salary for inexperienced folks though. Just looking at bonus, they have 4 types of bonus, Variable, Performance, AWS and Monthly, still got Monthly bonus, first time I see this bonus. The staff discount is very interesting, I wonder how much or how many percent, any cap or not. I remember long long ago I worked at NTUC Fairprice also got staff discount, maybe like 15 or 16 years ago, just part-time only. I think it was quite a small percentage, so small I didn't even realise until someone told me staff have discount, then I see like no difference or too little to notice. Meals provided, this one power, these days one meal outside getting more expensive unless someone can cook at home for you and bring to work. Birthday voucher, interesting, I know of birthday leave, first time I see birthda

Kurt Tay vs Loh Jia Hung at Void Deck

Image
https://www.asiaone.com/singapore/wrestling-champion-kurt-tay-accepts-strangers-challenge-fight-void-deck-now-under-police Actually Kurt Tay is same gang as me, Singaporean with foreign spouse. His wife is from Vietnam, now holding PR and they have a son and a daughter. I watch his YouTube videos sometimes, his videos are quite unusual, but so far I see he's just doing his own stuff and not disturbing anyone. Some of the comments can get very nasty, not sure why some people find enjoyment disturbing him. I think this led to the fight: "Speaking to AsiaOne, Tay said that Loh had been repeatedly taunting him and challenging him to a fight. " I found Loh Jia Hung's profile on Linkedin, he is a student at Republic Polytechnic, I see under his "Skills", clearly he is physically very skillful: I also found Kurt Tay's profile on Linkedin, by the name of "Tay Foo Wei", clearly he doesn't have any of those skills that Loh have. So why would a young

Monday Sign Letter of Offer

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/07/22nd-day-of-looking-for-job.html Tomorrow late afternoon go office sign the letter of offer from my ex-company, so fast so furious, this ex-boss damn powerful, say offer really offer the next day; met him on Thursday night, then Friday afternoon the HR called me to confirm the offer, sent me email and I acknowledged via email. No need interview, no need probation, only first 3 months take leave will be counted as no-pay leave, pay a bit higher than before, other than that the benefits all same as before, pretty good I guess. The HR will most probably ask me when I can start work, actually I can start anytime, rest too long also starting to get a bit bo liao.

22nd Day of Looking for Job

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/07/20th-day-of-looking-for-job.html Yesterday went for the second interview for "Interview 1". It went well. A few hours later while on the way to meet my ex-boss, the recruiter called me to confirm that it is positive, and also the HR of the company will contact me soon, ask for my certs and whatnot, then they will make an offer. I told the recruiter I meeting my ex-boss for dinner, maybe he interested to rehire me, she told me if ex-boss offer, don't accept too fast, compare "Interview 1" vs ex-boss offer. Went for dinner with ex-boss, turned out to be 2 hours Omakase dinner, catch up, talk about new trends, some history, pointed out my strength and weakness, discuss why I left, what will happen if I rejoin, overseas assignment, at the same time crafting and polishing the offer on the spot and asked me how much I want lol. I thought he should be asking what is my expected salary like every other recruiter, I a b

20th Day of Looking for Job

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/07/19th-day-of-looking-for-job.html Due to the very bad Glassdoor reviews on the company of "Interview 2", I went to LinkedIn to search for the company, LinkedIn have this feature where it will show the current and past employees, and one of the past employees happen to be someone I know and get along pretty well from my previous company. So I messaged this ex-colleague to find out more about the company, this ex-colleague told me the company in a mess now don't try. That explains why the Glassdoor reviews are so bad. Not that every other company don't have its fair share of bad reviews but this one is particularly glaring, I actually got a bit frightened. After that we chatted a bit more, then this ex-colleague happen to have a position for me, and it's something that interests me, so I thought no harm trying. Then this ex-colleague went to speak to my ex-boss, the one who gave me a huge increment out of nowhere,

19th Day of Looking for Job

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/07/15th-day-of-looking-for-job.html Yesterday I went for the "Interview 2", the guy called me up and scheduled a session. He was nice to take the time to explain how their organisation is structured, I think he is looking for someone to help his company do a transformation to keep up with current methodologies so that they can provide faster and cheaper service, told him I'm not suitable as I don't have that kind of experience, it sounded like a huge undertaking like a director level kind of job but I don't think he is going to pay me director level salary, it's way above my head. I must concede that looking for job is no joke, when I was holding a job, I thought looking for job is easy as pie, but the reality is totally different, it's actually quite stressful. Back in Apr, May and Jun very carefree, but when my brain switch to "looking for job" mode in Jul, the stress and self-doubt started to se

Thermal Throttling on 3060Ti

Image
Recently I noticed that my mouse cursor will lag a bit, and when I run Dota 2, and when there is too much activity on screen, it will crash to desktop. I thought a 1050 or 1060 would be able to easily run Dota 2, not to mention 3060Ti. Oh by the way it's the first time I try Dota 2, I actually played a lot of Dota 1 back in the day. Today I flipped over my CPU casing and saw a thick layer of dust at the bottom. I thought I cleaned it a couple of months ago, didn't expect the dust to accumulate so fast, I think every month have to clean once, where the heck did all the dust come from anyway.

15th Day of Looking for Job

Today went for 3 virtual interviews, even though virtual also damn shag, have to repeat the same thing lol. Interview 1 This one went pretty well, I think this one have chance because the job scope seems to be very suitable for me. The interviewers also very nice and started on time. This one is one of the biggest company in Singapore, I like this one. Interview 2 This guy made me wait for 11 minutes, when he finally came in, he said he got caught up with another meeting, then asked for my mobile number and said he will call me on Monday. I go google the company name and the Glassdoor reviews are very bad, probably not going to take this even if they offer. Interview 3 This one went quite awkward like the first Java developer role, I'm not suitable for the job, it's one of the earlier role that I applied but after that u-turn decided not to apply anymore because I think my coding not up to par, didn't expect them to grant an interview, but the interviewers are very nice tho

Completed All Python Tutorials

https://www.w3schools.com/python/default.asp I covered all the modules, have a good idea of what Python can do, the machine learning part too confusing for me so I just quickly go through. The Python MySQL is straightforward, just like plain old JDBC connection in Java. The Python MongoDB is quite straightforward, only difference is that MongoDB is a NoSQL database, rather than tables and rows in tabular form they call it collections and documents that comes in a form similar to JSON. Today I be taking a good rest for the 3 interviews tomorrow, after that maybe starting reading up on React, it's another popular thing that keeps popping up.

Finished Django Tutorial

https://www.w3schools.com/django/index.php "Django is a back-end server side web framework. Django is free, open source and written in Python. Django makes it easier to build web pages using Python." Django reminds me of JSP, JSTL and JPA, but more simpler to use and get it running, no wonder Python is so popular, I'm starting to like Python.

13th Day of Looking for Job

I must say looking for job also quite tiring, everyday check for suitable position and then apply, also have to handle the job recruiters who call to enquire, have to repeat the same thing because every time it is a different recruiter. Right now have 3 interviews scheduled for this Friday back-to-back, another 1 interview next week. I noticed that the recruiters mostly from overseas, Singapore afternoon time they greeted me good morning, mostly sounded like from India, sometimes a bit hard to understand their slang, India time is 2.5 hours slower than ours. I guess these days recruiters all outsourced overseas? Long long ago when I go through recruitment agency, it was a local recruitment company, have to go to their office to interview, after that go to the client's office to interview again. Recruiters seems to be a very competitive job, sibeh on, machiam like telemarketer, I guess they chiong for the commission, I know they get a cut for successful hire, not sure how much thoug

Typical Singapore Family Problem

https://theindependent.sg/woman-gives-mum-1600-monthly-but-mum-says-its-not-enough-complains-daughter-refuses-to-let-her-mum-retire https://www.whispers.sg/c/sgwhispers/posts/5342 The story first appeared in my Google news feed via The Independent Singapore, I also found the original publication at SGWhispers. I read this story with great interest because it reminded me of my own experience, how come as kids we are so happy and carefree, then after we grow up, things can change so drastically, family can be at each other's throat because of money. It's so difficult to say what is right and what is wrong, some can argue it's the parents responsibility to take care of children without expecting anything in return, or some can argue it should be the other way round, ultimately who is right? If you try to be "fair", then what is fair? Some may interpret it as "calculative", for example utilities bill is $200 a month, you have 4 "headcount" in the h

Finished SciPy Tutorial

Image
SciPy is Scientific Python, no idea what I am doing, got 72% for the quiz, most of it is hantam haha, not sure if I will be using this anytime soon, but good to know anyway.

12th Day of Looking for Job

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/07/looking-for-job.html During these 12 days, got plenty of calls from recruiters but only one interview. I posted my profile on MyCareersFuture, JobStreet, Indeed, Monster, also tried directly on a few company's career portal, thought I should cast a wide net. Last week I attended a Java developer lead virtual interview, did the technical assessment where they asked me to come up with a Spring Boot app based on a given scenario, I really struggled even translating the requirements into code and also realised my coding is quite bad, do refresher online versus coming up with an app is very different. By the way all the development work in my past projects were outsourced to overseas, basically I document the requirements from users and then I get developers to implement, so I don't get to code much, yeah I done some bug fixes and some small enhancements but it is nothing compared to coming up with something from scratch. I think i

Finished Pandas Tutorial

Image
Finally finished the Pandas tutorial and got a 92% for the quiz. This Pandas library is very simple and powerful for reading and analysing data files, can also clean and manipulate data files, also can use the Matplotlib library to plot data files. I think this will come in handy one day, now I can start to see why Python is so popular.

NS55 Credits SG$100 - Withdraw via ShopeePay

Last Monday 4th Jul I received the SMS from "NS Portal" saying SG$100 credited to LifeSG mobile app so I checked and found that I can use it at Sheng Siong, just nice I always do my groceries there. I thought it would be similar to the last time when they disbursed the NS50 SG$100 physical vouchers, like if I buy total $120, $100 pay by the vouchers, then remaining $20 pay by credit card (or cash or NETS). Boy was I wrong. Me, wife and daughter went to Sheng Siong and happily bought so many things, came up to $160.70, I asked the cashier can use the NS55 voucher or not she say can, but cannot exceed, must be less than $100, lol wtf, end up I paid by credit card, long queue behind so I also paiseh to ask too much. Then another staff told me I can withdraw cash from their Sheng Siong ATM, but can only withdraw $90, there will be a $0.20 charge, actually I saw this in the news also:  https://www.asiaone.com/lifestyle/legit-man-shares-hack-how-redeem-ns55-credits-cash-sheng-sion

Thinking of Attending Thai Lessons

Image
I have $1000 in SkillsFuture credits, I'm thinking of attending proper Thai lessons so I searched for courses at MySkillsFuture website and found a ton of Thai courses. After going over for some time I realised there are Elementary/Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels, and NUS also offers Thai language course and they go by Levels 1 to 9, something like the "Nine Swords of Dugu" , but NUS more expensive, one course $600, you attend all $5,400, my $1,000 where got enough, at most can take one. For the non-NUS ones, I think maybe can take 4-5 courses. So I focused on this "SkillsFuture@PA Reading and Writing Thai Language Elementary (Stage 1)" and it has multiple training partners, so I choose the one nearest to my home and it redirected me to onePA website which does nothing, meaning I have to manually search for the course within onePA. And the search results are quite staggering and irrelevant. So I tried again with "Thai Language", still didn'

Looking for Job

https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/06/no-news-from-binance.html Today is 1st of July, still no news from Binance, no point waiting. Yesterday night I turned on my Jobstreet profile and also my profile on MyCareersFuture.gov.sg so that employers can search for my profile. Anyway I applied for a few jobs on MyCareersFuture, see how it goes.

$CRO Appeared for No Reason

Image
https://marrythaigirlsingapore.blogspot.com/2022/06/won-9422996747-cro.html Hmm, I just checked my Crypto.com exchange wallet, 142++ $CRO appeared out of nowhere, I checked transaction history but didn't find anything. Now that I recall, last month also same, cannot find anything in transaction history and I thought it could be from the trading competition or a mistake, but doesn't seem to be a mistake because they didn't revert, or maybe it is some sort of silent monthly reward just for trading in the exchange? I did make quite a number of trades in May and Jun, but it's not as much as earlier months though, they didn't silently reward me for the earlier months haha. Anyway, I'll just leave it there for 1-2 days, see if they revert, if no, then I'll just take it.
